Public Works
The City of Piqua, Public Works Department, is responsible for:
- Street Maintenance
- Street Sweeping
- Leaf Removal

The Public Works Department has ten full-time employees that maintain approximately 215.3 lane miles of streets and 20.9 lane miles of alleys. The department also maintains the right-of-way, regulatory signs, and street closings for special events, maintains landscaping and turf in the right-of-way, is on call for weather-related emergencies, and assists other departments.
Patching streets and alleys is a temporary repair to areas until resurfacing or reconstruction is scheduled. The Public Works Department uses "hot mix" asphalt from local plants during warmer months. During colder months, the department uses "cold patch" material due to asphalt plants being closed for the winter. Patching crews check main thoroughfares, residential streets, and alleys regularly. You will see crews out during warmer months using our Dura-Patcher for road and alley patching.
Cleaning streets and gutters helps prevent blockage of storm drainage structures. Crews sweep the gutter line along our City streets daily, April through November, taking approximately 26 days to make a complete pass on every road and utilizing the snow route map as a guide for sweeping streets. The route starts on the North-end route followed by downtown, Shawnee, Candlewood, and Parkridge routes. The downtown and public parking lots are swept every Thursday. Sweeper maintenance and inclement weather can change the schedule at times.
Public Works staff maintain over 4,700 regulatory signs along our street network, representing enforceable laws and regulations. We strive to update 500 or more regulatory signs per year. This keeps us on about a ten-year replacement cycle, so we meet all regulatory guidelines set forth by the Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Public Works maintains regulatory pavement markings throughout our street network. Crews maintain over 492,615 linear feet of striping, including double yellow, single yellow, stop bars, edge lines, parking stalls, and additional striping. Some pavement markings maintained are 530 turn arrows, 31 school text, 13 railroad crossing symbols, and other markings.
Piqua has two leaf machines that pick up leaf piles in the curb line. We start leaf removal early to mid-October and finish in late December or early January. Crews make a minimum of three complete trips around town and utilize the street sweeper to sweep smaller debris along the curb line.
