The City of Piqua Street
Department is working to prepare for potential winter weather
conditions. Organizational preparedness and disciplined use of
snow and ice removal resources will help ensure safe driving
streets.
The City of Piqua established a salt usage conservation policy
in December 2008. The City felt it imperative to put a salt
usage policy
in place so that the best
possible use of our salt resources would allow for the safest
driving conditions for the traveling public.
The City has also made some changes to the way we approach
salting the roadways. The salt spreaders have been calibrated,
and Calcium Chloride is now being added to the salt. In the past
Calcium Chloride was only used when temperatures dropped below
10° F, it helps lower the freezing point to around -20°F. Now
it will be used from the onset, no matter what the temperature,
to prolong re-freezing of the roadways. It also helps by making
the salt active as soon as it hits the roadway, since it is a liquid, the salt is active
upon contact with the road. Calcium Chloride is an economical
way for the City to help preserve salt, with the cost being
approximately $1.00 per gallon.
The safety of the traveling
public is a top priority of the City during winter weather
months, and we are working hard to provide reasonably safe
roadways during bad weather.

Tips
for Residents:
Remove parked
vehicles from the street if possible
Snow plowed across
driveways is unavoidable. When shoveling, put the snow on the
left side of your driveway (as you face your property) to
lessen the amount of snow deposited by plow trucks. If it is
placed on the right side of the driveway, the plow trucks will
put it back across the driveway on their next pass.
Clear sidewalks on
your property as soon as practical
Take breaks when
shoveling to avoid exhaustion
Please help shovel your neighbors who need assistance and also
watch out for other needs they might have during bad weather
conditions.
Don't place snow into the streets. Place it in the yard or off
the street. Otherwise, it just compounds the problems of
driving and snow plowing.
Keep fire hydrants clear in case access to the hydrant is
needed. |
