City Manager, R. Mark
Rohr, presented the
concept of "The Loop" in a presentation to the
City Commission in May of 1999.
“The Loop” is a three-prong project which enhances the City of Piqua by providing aesthetically pleasing facilities for recreation, city government, and local commerce.
The three portions of "The Loop" are the Linear Park, Municipal
Government Complex, and Downtown Revitalization. |
| |
| Linear Park |
| |
| The Linear Park (2001) is an asphalt path to be built on the former railroad right-of-way, for walking, jogging, bicycling, and in-line skating.
The next section of the Linear Park, called Phase IV, runs from
French Park to Swift Run Lake. |
| |
| The Linear Park includes these features: |
| |
- Arched tunnel under Sunset Drive.
- French Park – New park at Steele & Water Streets to access
Linear Park.
- College Street Bridge – new access bridge over College Street
- River Bridge - A timber deck on the existing bridge to allow access over the Great Miami River
- Bicycle Stairway – for entrance to the river bridge from the west.
- Rest areas with landscaping, benches, and trash receptacles.
- Historical and mileage markers.
- Running along the hydraulic canal
|
| |
| The ADA compliant Linear Park runs from Spiker
Road to Troy-Sidney Road and to the north from French Park to
Swift Run Lake. It will also connect to a walkway along the Great Miami River.
Total length of the
Linear Park and waterway walk will exceed 13 miles. |

| New Municipal Government Complex |
| |
The second component is the new Municipal
Government Complex. The $7.3 million project was completed in
November, 2001.
Featuring a new police department and city offices, the two-story structure
houses the City Commission chambers with state-of-the-art technology. The project includes a two-story lobby, and a link to the existing city hall, which
went under complete interior renovation.
The 50,000 square foot project also includes rehabilitation of the fire station and a tie-in to the
Linear Park. |
| |
| Downtown Revitalization |
| |
| The city has installed (and continues to
install) streetscaping in the downtown area. The City also
applied for grants to provide matching funds to property owners for exterior building façade improvements. This private-public partnership will
includes: |
| |
- New sidewalks with brick pavers.
- Old fashioned street lamps.
- Street trees and benches.
- Decorative trash receptacles.
- Storefront Façade improvements.
- Connection from the Linear Park to the residential historic district.
