A team of assessors from the
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.,
(CALEA), will arrive December 8, 2007, to examine all aspects of
the Piqua Police Department policies and procedures, management,
operations, and support services.
Verification by the team that
Piqua Police Department meets the Commission's state-of-the-art
standards is part of a voluntary process to gain
re-accreditation - a highly prized recognition of law
enforcement professional excellence.
As a part of the on-site
assessment, agency employees and members of the community are
invited to offer comments at a public information session on
Monday December 10, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. The session will be
conducted in the Piqua City Hall Commission Chamber, 201 W.
Water St. The public information session will be telecast live
on Cable Channel 5.
If for some reason an individual
cannot speak at the public information session but would still
like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do
so by telephone. The public may call (937) 778-5149 on Tuesday,
December 11, 2007, between 9 a.m. and noon.
Telephone comments as well as
appearances at the public information session are limited to 10
minutes and must address the agency's ability to comply with
CALEA's standards. A copy of the standards is available at the
Piqua Police Department. Local contact is Lieutenant Joe Speer,
Accreditation Manager; phone number (937) 778-2027.
Persons wishing to offer written
comments about the Piqua Police Department's ability to meet the
standards for re-accreditation are requested to write:
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA),
10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2215.
The Piqua Police Department has
to comply with 459 standards in order to gain re-accredited
status. Receiving re-accreditation from the Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. graphically
demonstrates that the Piqua Police Department is in fact a
professional law enforcement agency. This is evidenced by the
fact that the Piqua Police Department is governed by a set of
standards that are recognized by the law enforcement community
as epitomizing the highest standards of police service.
Accreditation is for three years,
during which time the agency must submit annual reports
attesting continued compliance with those standards under which
they were initially accredited.
