October 22 is a significant date in
the history of the Fort Piqua Plaza. It was on this date in 1891
that the building was originally opened to the public. October
22, 2008 will also be a significant date as this is when the
first formal event will be held in the beautifully restored 4th
floor ballroom. A special evening has been planned for the date
and tickets are now available to the general public for the
event.
Entertainment for the evening will be the Glenn Miller Orchestra
and also John Mills and Elmer Hopper, the New Generation of the
Mills Brothers.
“What could be better for this historic and spectacular
evening but to bring back the fabulous music of the legendary
Mills Brothers.” said Gala organizer Ruth Koon. John is the
son of Don Mills, who was the last surviving member of the
original group. The new generation of the Mills Brothers
highlights a new duo, John Mills and Elmer Hopper. Elmer Hopper
spent twenty-one year with renowned group The Platters.
In addition to being able to hear the music of the Mills
Brothers guests will also be treated to the sounds of the world
famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. “The orchestra has performed in
all 50 United States as well as abroad and the 19-member band
continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements.”
says Koon. “The Glenn Miller Orchestra today is still the most
sought after big-bands in the world just as it was in Glenn’s
day.”
The event gets underway at 6:30 p.m. with drinks and Hors d’oeuvres
and will conclude with desserts and coffee following the
concert.
Tickets for the Fort Piqua Plaza Gala are $150 per person and
can be purchased at the Mainstreet Piqua office, 326 N. Main
Street or by calling Ruth Koon at 937-778-1288. A portion of the
ticket price is tax deductible.
