From
the Piqua Police Department
(Media Release Number: 13MR02):
Increase in Commercial Burglaries |
| |
We have identified an increase in
the number of break-ins to businesses since December 1, with a
particular surge the past weekend. The police department is
engaged in a number of special tactics regarding both
investigation and targeted patrol. As part of a comprehensive,
proactive, and intelligence-based response, we would like to
increase awareness in the community of preventative measures. We
also want to be sure anyone with specific information about the
crimes is aware of how to pass along the information and
understands that it is easy to remain anonymous if so desired.
Some advice for all businesses (especially those located in our
downtown area that are office-based or retail-service oriented)
that could discourage those perpetrating the recent rash of
breaking-and-entering:
Do not keep significant amounts of cash in the business
overnight.
If cash is present, make sure it is secured in a safe which is
permanently affixed to the building, or a safe too heavy to be
easily carried away.
Alarm your business and set the alarm every night.
Secure all possible entry points such as windows, air
conditioning units, roof hatches.
Reinforce doors’ security features (types of doors, locks,
bolts, hinges, etc).
Keep the interior lit at night if it would provide passers-by
and police a way to see inside. Maximize outdoor lighting.
Remove physical features that would help a burglar gain access
to your business.
You may contact our office and ask to speak to an administrator
to arrange for a security survey of your business. For a limited
time, for these types of businesses, we will schedule an officer
to provide security advice at a time when we are adequately
staffed to handle our other calls for service.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity around a closed business
should call 911 immediately so an officer can check it out.
Anyone who has information that could help us solve these crimes
is asked to Submit-A-Tip through any of our Piqua Crime Stoppers
anonymous reporting tools. A complete explanation is available
on our website
(www.piquaohpd.org). You can report:

apply)
