| On the morning of
Friday, May 2, 2008, 33 World War II Veterans from Miami
County departed from the American Legion Post 184 at 8:30 AM,
accompanied by 16 personal care-givers. The "Mission:
World War II Vets to Washington, DC" committee organized the trip and raised
the necessary funds in private contributions so that the three-day event
would be absolutely free for the vets. This trip was the
second such trip organized by the committee.
The send-off ceremony was emceed
by City of Piqua Public Works Director Tom Zechman. Mayor
Tom Hudson led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Committee chairman Glenn Devers spoke and
thanked the veterans for the service to our country. Both
the Police Department and Fire Department Honor Guards took part
in the send-off ceremony. The Piqua Fire Department Honor Guard
presented the flag as it was taken from their hands and hoisted
into the air by raising the ladder on PFD’s ladder truck
during the National Anthem. Many citizens attended
the ceremony and lined the street to see the veterans off.
The vets will visit the WW II
Memorial and other sites and memorials while in the nation's
capital on Saturday and Sunday and will return Sunday evening.
Thanks to all veterans for their service to our country!
