On
July 17, 2010, Protect Our Water Ways (POWW)
conducted a river sweep of a 16-mile section of the Great Miami
River from the southern part of Sidney through the City of
Piqua. This river sweep was the 7th annual event conducted
by POWW. POWW is a group established in 2004 by Piqua's
Jeff Lange to help protect and clean the waterways in this area.
146 volunteers
manned 38 canoes and other equipment. Other equipment used
in the clean up included a crane truck, dump truck, front-end
loader/backhoe, Piqua Police Department's 4-wheel ATV and the
City of Piqua Street Department's "gator".
Approximately 45 walking volunteers walked the banks of the
river and the roads running along the river.
Jeff Lange reported that approximately 10,000 pounds of trash
was removed in the river sweep. 70 tires were removed from the
river. Both of these amounts were down from the 2009 river
sweep. Another "interesting" find in this year's
clean up was a 275 gallon home heating oil storage tank!
