| On Saturday, April 5, 2008, a number of citizens
marked the 40th Anniversary of the assassination of the Rev.
Martin Luther King Jr. with a civil rights march from the Miami
Valley Centre Mall along the bike path to the Martin Luther King
Bridge spanning College Street. (the actual anniversary
was on April 4, 2008)
Piqua Police Chief Wayne Willcox emceed the event. Other
City officials also were in attendance. The Rev. Joel
King, an Ohio minister and a first cousin to Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. was the featured speaker. Rev. King was
introduced by Kris Lee, Piqua Police Officer and D.A.R.E.
officer. A highlight of the event, was Ayla Shropshire, an
8-year-old second-grader from Longfellow School, Sidney,
reciting Dr. King's entire "I Have a Dream," speech
from memory.
The Piqua High School choir was on hand for the ceremony at
the bridge. They performed "Innocent Little
Lamb," and "House in D'Rock.".
Mary Ann Fickenwirth, president of the Piqua Association of
Churches presented an appreciation plaque to
Joel King on behalf of the association.
Mayor Tom Hudson read a proclamation
recognizing anniversary date in Piqua.
The march honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the
headed by Larry Hamilton, retired Piqua teacher, and Major
Ron Starnes, Corps Commanding Officer of the Piqua Salvation
Army who served as co-chairmen for this event sponsored by the
Piqua Association of Churches.
