Great Miami River Recreational Trail Planning  |

|
|
|
| The
Great Miami River Recreational Trail (GMRT), when complete, will be a 90
mile multi-use recreational trail generally following the Great Miami
River alignment from Sidney to Fairfield. The construction of the 3 mile
“Piqua” segment of the GMRT will be a collaborative effort involving
numerous agencies. The conceptual alignment of the trail has been
established, with the beginning point to the north being a newly created
intersection with the existing east west “PATH” segment of the City
of Piqua liner park system (located near Lock Nine Park), and the ending
point being Peterson Road to the south. The GMRT will lie on the west
bank of the Great Miami River (GMR) from Lock Nine Park to a point south
of the power plant, cross the river to the east bank, and then continue
south along the east bank of the GMR to Peterson Road. The exact
location of the river crossing and the alignment through the power plant
property are to be determined by the GMRT Study project.
In addition to being a part of a much larger network of trails that will reach as far south as Cincinnati, the local portion of the trail alignment passes by an intermediate school, a boat ramp on the GMR, and small dam on the GMR that is owned by the city. The trail alignment is also bordered by a large number of residential structures located in an older area of town. Although these residential properties are mostly separated from the trail alignment by the GMR levee system and South Main Street, there are several locations along the alignment that present an opportunity to create access to the trail for the neighborhood residents. The purpose of the GMRT Study is to solicit community involvement in the plan development to ensure the finished trail takes full advantage of existing amenities and possible opportunities along the proposed trail alignment so as to best serve the citizenry of Piqua upon completion. The project construction, which will be funded in part by an Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) grant, will be bid in the spring of 2008 as a design-build project and is to be completed by the fall of 2008. |
