Engineering Department

The primary responsibilities of the Engineering Department, a division of the Public Works Department, include the design, construction, inspection, and administration of public works improvement projects. The Engineering Department's goal is to act on behalf of the citizens of Piqua by overseeing all of the public works improvements projects to ensure the high level of quality service that the citizen's of Piqua have come to expect from the City's infrastructure and public facilities.

The Engineering Department staff includes the City Engineer, two Engineering Technicians and a part time Clerk Typist. The Engineering Department's office is located on the second floor of the Municipal Government Complex. We are in the same office as the Public Works Department, which is staffed by the Public Works Director and his Administrative Assistant, each of who provide daily support for the completion of responsibilities assigned to the Engineering Department.

The services provided through the Engineering Department include in-house design of street reconstruction projects and performing various types of inspections including sidewalks and drive approaches, street and utility construction in subdivisions and new street construction. We are also responsible for the creation and continuous updating of utility maps, performing the drainage and utility review on various types of private development projects, and providing intra-departmental and public assistance in the acquisition of information pertaining to public right-of-way, traffic analysis data, public utilities, mapping, and various other public records maintained and/or administered by the Engineering Department.

The Engineering Department also coordinates with county, state and federal agencies regarding local projects and we assist in securing state and federal funding for local projects.

2007 Major Accomplishments

	Public Works Improvement Projects

•	Completed the design and construction of Staunton Street Reconstruction Project from Second Street to Third Street.
•	Began construction on the joint city/county County Road 25-A Reconstruction Project from the Great Miami River to Country Club Road.
•	Completed the design and construction of the 2007 Street Resurfacing Project.
•	Began construction on the Fort Piqua Hotel Restoration Project
•	Completed the Hollow Park Bike Path Resurfacing Project.
•	Continued design work on the East Ash Street Reconstruction Project from Spring Street to the Great Miami River Bridge. Hired a consultant to complete the Environmental Services portion of the Project. Hired a consultant to begin the Right-of-Way Acquisition portion of the project.

	Private Development Improvement Projects

•	Provided construction inspection for the Aldi’s Sanitary Sewer Extension Project located on East Ash Street.
•	Provided construction inspection for the sanitary sewer and water extension for the Quality Forms Utility Extension Project located on West US Route 36.
•	Reviewed the construction plans for the proposed Swift Run Estates Subdivision – Section One.

	Engineering Department Projects

•	Submitted the City of Piqua’s Storm Water Management Plan (SWMP) to the Ohio EPA as part of the Phase II Storm Water Requirements.
•	Continued working on updating the Utility Maps.
•	Continued working on updating the Master Tree Plan for the City of Piqua.
•	Installed 500 Storm Drain Markers on catch basins throughout the city to satisfy a segment of the Phase II Storm Water Requirements
•	Conducted two City-wide Tree Plantings. Thirty trees were planted as part of the Spring Tree Planting and forty-three trees were planted as part of the Fall Tree Planting.

•	Contract with a consultant to begin the design of the Broadway Avenue (S.R. 66) Reconstruction Project for construction in 2009.
•	Complete the construction inspection for the Fort Piqua Hotel Restoration Project.
•	Complete the design and construction of the 2008 Street Resurfacing Project.
•	Hire a contractor to complete the design/build of the Great Miami Recreational Trail Project in conjunction with the Miami County Park District
