Animal Rescue Background:

On January 31, 2011 the Piqua City Health Department executed a search warrant at the One More Chance Animal Rescue & Adoption facility at 125 Clark Ave. As a result, the building was condemned and legal action was initiated against the operator. On February 11, 2011, all 104 dogs were released into the custody of the City of Piqua.

Since the condemnation, the Piqua Health Department along with the Miami County Animal Shelter and multiple volunteers have worked to clean up the facility and have been sheltering in place the remaining dogs. All of the dogs are now being well cared for, given fresh food and water daily, pens are cleaned daily, they are being exercised and socialized.

The Piqua Health Department with support from the Miami County Animal Shelter and veterinarian advice from Dr. Lisa Nadasi, DVM, is now formulating a plan to remove the animals from the facility so they may be adopted into good homes.

What do we Need?

We need volunteers to help feed, water, clean, and exercise dogs. The number of volunteers has dropped off recently. We still need help until all the dogs are removed. We also need bags of bedding, our supply has diminished.

Volunteers - to feed, water, clean, walk dogs, and other misc. jobs.
Hours are M-F 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM and Sat / Sun 10:00 AM to Noon
No one under 15 will be permitted as a volunteer.
All volunteers must sign a waiver form and sign in and out daily.

I am pleased to report that all of the dogs have been removed from the facility!! The remaining three left today. One was adopted and the remaining two went to a foster. I could never express enough gratitude to all the volunteers and to those that donated supplies and resources to this effort! This was truly a team effort.

I would also like to thank the property owner, John Scarborough who understood the dire situation we were dealing with and allowed us to stay in the building while the dogs were relocated. He also paid for the utilities during that time and then allowed us to donate the remaining supplies to organizations that care for animals.

A final thank you to all my fellow city employees who assisted in this effort along with the City Manager, Fred Enderle and the City Commission for supporting our efforts.

We are now down to 16 dogs remaining at the facility. The Miami County Animal Shelter will be assisting those interested in adoptions this Sunday March 13th at an Adopt-a-thon. The hours will be from Noon until 3 PM at the Clark Ave facility. We hope to get the remaining dogs into good homes within the next week. Many thanks to the outstanding volunteers who have donated their time and energy into caring for these dogs. A special thank you to the core group of volunteers who have been team leaders, medical assistants, and cheerleaders! Those include: Don, Jennifer, Dottie, David, Cindy, Liz, Stephen, Cathy, Julie, and many more (and those I am forgetting!)!

We now have 37 dogs remaining at the facility. We are now asking once again for donations of bagged bedding. Our supply has diminished.

We are also seeing a drop in the number of volunteers; we still need help daily to support the remaining 37 dogs.

The Miami County Animal Shelter will be sponsoring a dog adopt-a-thon at the Troy Superpetz on March 6 from 10 am to 2 pm. Many of our rescue dogs will be featured.

We are now down to 55 dogs remaining.  More dogs were taken to the Miami County Animal Shelter this week and are awaiting adoption.  Also dogs were taken to by The Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals (SICSA) of Kettering and Robyn’s Nest Rescue.

We have been in contact with officials from Clark County , as they are now dealing with the Lower Valley Pike facility operated by the same person.  We wish them luck and we support their efforts.

The number of volunteers has slowed down, but we continue to have a strong core group that generously donate their time each day.  Many thanks to all who have volunteered and donated to this effort.

A special thanks goes out to the students and staff of the High Street Elementary School for their kind donations this week.

Needs: Volunteers especially during the week

For anyone interested in possibly adopting one of the dogs from the One More Chance Animal Rescue facility, there are three options:

1) Visit the facility during the following hours (Monday - Friday 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM & Saturday - Sunday 10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon) and sign up for the dog you are interested in adopting.

2) Call the Piqua Health Department at 778-2060 and inform them which dog (by number) you are interested in adopting and your telephone number

3) Send an email of interest to dogrescue@piquaoh.org listing which dog (by number) you are interested in adopting and your telephone number

Once a dog is removed from the facility at 125 Clark Avenue to the Miami County or Montgomery County facilities or another agency, you will be notified.  The actual adoptions will take place through one of those facilities.

Care for the animals is continuing daily with a tremendous amount of support from the community and a faithful army of volunteers.

18 dogs were removed this week. 10 went to the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center and 8 went to the Miami County Animal Shelter. The animals will be assessed by those agencies and placed into their adoption process.

A log of the dogs removed will be maintained for viewing.
